Le festival de Beiteddine:

Beiteddine Festival is one of the finest festivals in the Middle East and features the World greatest artists. It is held in a 200-year-old palace in Beiteddine, a little town in the mountainous region of the Shouf, 45 kilometers south-east of Beirut.

The Palace. Beiteddine Palace is a master-piece of the early XIXth Century Lebanese architecture built by Emir Beshir Chehab II on a headland, which overlooks a terraced mountain-side. No less than 36 years were necessary to complete and decorate it

Performance areas. The Palace has several courtyards of which 3 are used on a regular basis during the Beiteddine Festival for perfor-mances (Al Midan, Al Salamlek, Dar el Hareem). On the other hand, a major hall has been spe-cially renovated and equipped to hold exhibitions of photographs, sculptures or paintings

Artists. Since its creation, the Beiteddine Festival has presented numerous great interna-tional, regional and local artists. Among these artists are Elton John, Fairuz, José Carreras, Cesaria Evora, Maurice Bejart, Jessey Norman, Kazem al-Saher, Tito Puente, Youssou N'Dour, Montserrat Caballe, John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, Placido Domingo,..

Getting to Beiteddine. Beiteddine is accessible via two main routes: one route goes South from Beirut and then turns Eastward at Damour and back towards the Northeast to get to Beiteddine; the second route by which Beited-dine is accessible goes up the mountains following the Damascus highway and then turns into the Chouf mountains at Mudairej and passing below the Barouk Cedars.

The Shouf area, at the heart of which lies Beiteddine Palace, is a splendid region that offers to the visitor numerous preserved historic, archi-tectural, and natural attractions.

The Byblos International Festival is a festival that dares to be different. Its mission: to evolve continuously, and promote the culture, Byblos city, and more, the Lebanon of diversity.

Philosophy. The philosophy of the Festival may be summarized in four major points: Offering shows of high artistic quality to the largest pos-sible audience; boosting the shows intended for youths; taking on a strong socio-economic dimen-sion by including the active forces in town; providing a space for artistic creation and enhancing exchanges between the Lebanese and foreign artists

2004 Edition. The 2004 edition, which took place in June and July, incarnated ambition, creativity and dynamism. The Festival pursued its development based upon its success in 2003 (in regard to the quality and quantity of audience), while consecrating a significant part to innovation

Off Byblos Festival. "OFF Byblos Festival" took place in parallel with Byblos International Festival. It was the first artistic festival in Lebanon that was open to independent young artists, Lebanese and foreigners. It was a foyer for the eclectic artistic creation, with several ambitions, one of which being to let the public meet the underground culture that was heretofore reserved to a limited public

Socio-economic role. Through "Byblos Festival Village", the Festival also plays a socio-economic role in aiming at ensuring interaction between the culture and the local economy; cooperation with the municipal staff, implication of the town's active forces, encouraging a maximum participation on the part of the people of Jbeil...

Et pour finir, le festival de Baalbeck ! laugh.gif

Under the columns of Jupiter’s temple or in the heart of the temple of Bacchus, the Baalbeck Festival offers every year to its audience, an occasion to witness unfor-gettable moments of artistic emotions.

The Creation. The Baalbeck International Festival held its first season in 1956. It was inau-gurated by Jean Cocteau who came in person to present “La Machine Infernale”. The subsequent seasons saw an impressive array of artists of such world renown as Rostropo-vitch, Richter… The Paris and Milan Operas, Rudolf Noureïev with the Royal Ballet, Maurice Béjart’s Ballet du XXème siècle, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, the Bolchoï Ballet, all appeared along with great orchestras of the world.

Evolution. The Festival evolved in two main directions. It kept with Lebanon’s heritage as a crossroads of civilisations, bridging East and West, and it celebrated creativity by producing original works commissioned from contemporary writers and composers.

The Revival. Two major performances laun-ched the Festival in 1997. The Lebanese troupe “Caracalla Dance Theatre” in a show entitled “Andalousia, the Lost Glory”, and the Radio-France Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Marelk Janowski with the famous cellist Mstislav Rostro-povitch as soloist.

In 1998, the Festival celebrated the centenary of the first German archeological visit to Baal-beck, which followed Emperor William II’s visit in 1898. The programme featured six concerts of international importance : the Radio Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by Georges Prêtre and Carl St. Clair, the great jazz band “The Herbie Hancock Quartet”, the diva Nina Simone, an avant-garde perfor-mance with Urban Sax and Michel Moglia’s fire organs, the singer Fadia El Hage with the Sarband group, and finally, Lebanon’s ambassador to the world: Fairouz.

Latest Festivals. In 2003, A leading virtuoso and mostly acclaimed for his interpretations of Vivaldi, Fabio Biondi and his Orchestra Europa Galante opened on July 12th the Baalbeck Festival season 2003 at the temple of Bacchus. The concert was followed by a gala dinner in the gardens of the Acropolis.

One week later at the same venue, the legen-dary jazzman Ahmad Jamal accompanied by Idriss Muhamad and James Cammack gave a once in a life time concert on July 18th and 19th.The two evenings were sold out. The next event took place at the temple of Jupiter.

2004. The season 2004 witnessed ten impor-tant events. It started on July 9th &10th with the most famous Brazilian Dance Theatre, Grupo Corpo. 21 talented dancers presented a specta-cular performance on the steps of the temple of Jupiter, with vibrant music, extraordinary costu-mes and meticulous choreography.
